WELCOME TO GARNER ARTS CENTER EXPLORE – ENGAGE - ENJOY
Dear Friends: Thank you for joining us to Celebrate the Return of GARNER Arts Festival! All of us have been through more than we could ever have imagined since last Arts Festival, and now it is time we begin – still carefully and respectfully – to get out and appreciate the beauty in the world, which is so evident in the creativity and artistry of our many participating artists and artisans. We are especially proud and excited this year to welcome you to our new home in building 35 , located at the gateway to the GARNER Historic District. We are closer than ever to the finish line and pleased to be able to present 3 amazing exhibitions in our new space. We are immensely grateful to the family of renowned photographer Ned Harris for their tremendous support of building 35, and for the Harris family’s ongoing support of the Ned Harris Education Studio . A huge shoutout to Joanne Howard and Brooklyn Demme as well, and to all who helped make building 35 a reality! Your donation can help us complete building 35. Become a part of the GARNER Arts Center Legacy . Visit the Info Booth or garnerartscenter.org! Many of the artists and performing artists this Arts Festival are supported through ReStarts the Arts , a regrant program of ArtsWestchester with support from the Office of the Governor, the New York State Legislature and the New York State Council on the Arts. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to assist these artists and enrich our community with their incredible work. We remain eternally thankful to the family of the late artist Ted Ludwiczak for Ted’s Creekside Stonehead Project , the only permanent outdoor exhibition of Ludwiczak’s carved Hudson River stoneheads in the United States. Finally, we extend our infinite gratitude to our Sponsors, and the Board and Staff of our host, the GARNER Historic District, which supports our mission to advance the creation and presentation of contemporary, experiential art. Thank you for joining us. Please enjoy! GARNER ARTS CENTER BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND STAFF

PETER STRASSER Big Risks: Creative Discoveries Large-scale tree sculptures
This exhibition features a few large new abstract sculptures created from locally sourced trees that had fallen and were salvaged specifically for this show. Strasser creates his massive sculptures using a sawmill and reimagines his work with the existing organic shape of his milled timbers, while maintaining the integrity of the beautiful living spirit of the tree. Strasser has cut large shapes in selected timber slabs that hold up to the exterior elements. Strasser took his inspiration from his “circa 1840” timber framed barn/studio. The original mortise and tenon joinery and huge hand-hewn timbers that make up the structure of the barn were created in an era before electrical machinery. The strength and simplicity of the structure contains the knowledge of previous woodworking generations of that time. There is also a direct relationship of the barn, its structure and its purpose, to the surrounding natural environment. This relationship has driven home to Strasser the understanding of working wood that is centered on its extraordinary bond to all living creatures. The barn housed the animals, supplies and tools that would sustain a family and the generations that would follow. It was a time when humanity did not exert such a heavy toll on nature but was more in tune and part of the natural world.

COLLETTE V. FOURNIER QUEEN MOTHER OF PROGRESS and African Journeys Digital Photography
Trodding to the Durbar , Bepoase, Ghana
“There is a traditional African saying that “It takes a village to raise a child”. My exhibition is a photographic documentation of “The Queen Mother of Progress”. To my vision, this photograph best exemplifies an African culture of traditional life and how village elders are held in high esteem. This is a story of how a third world community works together and supports one another. In August 2010, Ms. Alexandreena Dixon, Executive Director of Chiku Awali African Dance, Arts and Culture was enstooled in the village of Bepoase, Ghana, W. Africa in a four hour ceremony called the Durbar. The four-hour celebration consisted of dancing, drumming, speeches, and traditional rituals of being raised and lowered three times on the stool, then being dusted with a white powder as a form of protection. With her new name Nana Yaa Oforiwaa Amanfo I, she is now responsible for bringing the village and schools up to date economically and with
new technology. “ - Collette Fournier

JONATHAN DEMME: Collecting with Abandon Courtesy of Joanne Howard and Brooklyn Demme Multimedia Exhibition
The Book of Revelation , Everald Brown
GARNER Arts Center is proud to once again present JONATHAN DEMME: Collecting with Abandon . The exhibition features works from this extraordinary collection of Haitian, Island and Outsider art. Originally on view in Building 35. Remounted in GARNER’s Frank Welles Studio gallery. Jonathan’s introduction to Haitian art was through a small storefront gallery on the upper west side of Manhattan in the mid ‘80’s. His love of the art led him to making his first of countless trips to Haiti in 1986. In addition to the art, he fell in love with the country. He made several documentaries in Haiti, most notably a film on activist and radio journal ist, Jean Dominique entitled “The Agronomist”. -Joanne Howard

Josh Fox IMPOSUKE BOOLBOOL Curated by Jonathan Shorr
IMPOSUKE BOOLBOOL is Josh’s premiere showing of his evocative, unexpect ed paintings. The artworks reveal his ability to experiment with raw energy, refined new language, and irresistible color. These paintings are a profound evocation of the artist’s expressive mind and show us a way to understand our own. His visual art, theater, and filmmaking have an intense, shocking, arrest ing visual style. Josh has been creating ground-breaking visual art since he was in his early twenties--drawing, painting, video, film and theater. He is an Oscar-nominated, Emmy-winning writer director and an internationally recognized spokesperson and leader on the issue of fracking and extreme energy development. https://www.instagram.com/joshfoxpaintings/ https://www.instagram.com/joshfoxfilm/ Richard Bedkowski Echos of a World Gone… Curated by Jonathan Shorr Rich is daring to do something different; attaching himself to new ideas and trying to get to another place. Where is it ? What is it? Extremely strange and beautiful. Based on illusionary practices; nothing real; nothing hard or objec tive—it’s all subjective. Sincere expressions of his state of mind. @richardbedkowski

COVER LOVER REMIX is a juried multi-artist exhibition of “remixed” album covers. This exhibition explores the transition of visual artists from consumers of album art to creators of reimagined album covers. Dimensionally, all exhibiting pieces measure 24” x 24,” which maintains the square shape of an album cover, while doubling the cover size for increased visual impact. Participating artists will reinterpret iconic album covers while maintaining a conceptual thread to the original album artwork, which will be visible via QR code.

I paint the invisible interactions between psychology and environments through cognitive and abstract maps. This free mode of exploration - based on psycho geography - plays a creative role in the development of the artworks. My exper imental art named ‘geographic abstraction’ challenges the creative norms with material such as tapes or ribbons sometimes on unexpected objects like these records covers. By a drifting process, I show how thinking can be mapped and how the spatial experience brings together personal narratives and collective psychology. - Philippe Halaburda

KRIS CAMPBELL #iamCOLOR series Large-scale tapestries| Eight 11’ squares
“In 2020, I started a new series in response to the pandemic. Indoor spaces were not safe or even open. To see art, art had to go outside. The #iamCOLOR series is intended to be hung from trees or in the open field. During the quarantine, I looked at art everyday online, through Instagram. The new series is intended to be photographed and posted to social media. When a person stands in front of the piece, it will make a crown, a halo of color. They will see themselves and others in their glory, Their true colors shining through. The art is complete when the viewer has their picture taken with the piece. Each piece is of a flower, and each flower is part of the rainbow. Our souls vibrate with different colors. These works complement soul colors. The people complete it. I miss people.” - Kris Campbell

JOHN MORTON & DUNCAN BELL How’s That Going To Work?
Composer John Morton and Artist/Engineer Duncan Bell install How’s That Going to Work? , an audience-activated environment for the GARNER Arts Festival, inviting visitors to experience a new appreciation of their sonic and spatial surroundings. Visitor’s movements activate a sensor that trigger and alter sounds (based on recordings made by the composer of hand drummers), while their steps simultaneously change lighting in the installation space. The inter-related installations explore both physical and sonic pathways, uncovering and revealing multiple layers of sound and color, mirroring our everyday meanderings and encounters.

The Wishing Booth By Samtubia + Sagoma
“The Wishing Booth is an interactive experience that gives a person 90 seconds of guided active meditation. Specifically creative visualization. That sounds fun, right? No, that sounds granolaLOL; what makes this fun is the presentation will be anything but granola. The experience will be executed in a manner that calls on surrealism, horror, and cult-like imag ery. Why? Well, because we are believers that enlightenment occurs best when the subject is entertained.” - Samtubia + Sagoma
